Stevens Canyon - January 9, 2011

Distance: 20.5 miles Ascent: 2,839 feet Moving time: 2:27 hours

It was cold this week and it was cold this morning. It hasn't rained in a few days but it has been too cold to have much evaporation so we were expecting wet trails and wet stream crossings. The stream crossing turned out to be uneventful and I think all of us crossed without getting wet. The trails were in good shape but a bit on the soft side. I would like to attribute my slow climb to the soft soil, but that would not be appropriate. I think the lack of riding and holiday enjoyment was being felt by all of us as we headed up Stevens Canyon Trail and Indian Creek. As we approach the summit, the sun was trying to break through the overcast. It was still cold but at least there wasn't any wind. We saw quite a bit of ice on trees and bushes near the summit, which is a bit unusual for up there at mid-day.

I had neglected to replace my front brake pads, so I didn't have any real stopping power. We decided to head down Montebello Road instead. We made good time (even passing some roadies), but Anna was an ice cube by the time we reached the bottom. We haven't figured out how to keep her warm on these cold rides.
